What happened to the vampire? If you have an idea, please let us know

Ah, fall, with its shorter days, cooler nights and colorful leaves, is upon us. The season officially begins Thursday, which means the first big event of fall, Halloween, isn't far off.

That signals it's time for our readers to put their pens to paper or fingers to keyboards and scare up an entry for The Record's Halloween Story Contest.

When we restarted this contest two years ago, having run a similar contest in the 1980s, we had no idea if there'd be much interest. It was just an attempt to encourage writing, to fight that misnomer of Stockton being illiterate.

To our delight, nearly 1,000 wizards with words have submitted entries in each of the past two years, and the stories have been fabulous. We've laughed, shuddered and cringed at the tales we've received, but mostly we've just marveled at the creative juices flowing out there.

Stockton illiterate? Whoever made that claim needs to come here and judge our contest. It renders that snotty assessment absolutely bogus.

My colleagues have already begun to volunteer to judge this year's submissions, because they know that this contest generates stories that are hilarious, ghoulishly violent, thought-provoking, mysterious, or are wild fantasies.

Judging is no easy task, because there are so many good entries. Each judge is asked to read stories in one division, but I read them all. It's my contest and I think it's only right to read them, but it's also my favorite duty of the year.

I'm not a good creative writer. I never have been. It's the only high school English class in which I didn't earn an A. My 25-year-old niece wrote a book when she was in junior high and is looking for an agent to market her first novel. I didn't get that creative gene, though, so I marvel at those with a gift for fiction writing.

There are lots of wordsmiths in our area who have it, from children with amazing imaginations to adults with real literary flair.

Among my favorite stories are those that come from children, who illustrate them with crayon-colored pictures. Teachers who take the time to make the story-writing contest a class project in the days of relentless standardized test preparation are my heroes.

So, without further ado, here are the rules for the 2010 contest:

? There are six age divisions: kindergarten and first grade; second and third grades; fourth through sixth grades; seventh and eighth grades; high school; and adult.

? Gift cards will be awarded for the top three stories in each category. The winning entries will be published in The Record. The top three in each category will be published on line.

? Deadline for submission of stories is Thursday, Oct. 21, one month from today. Each person may enter as many stories as he or she likes. Each entry must include a first and last name, the appropriate division for the entry, and contact information, either a phone number or an e-mail address. Teachers may submit their contact information if entering a class set of stories.

? In 300 words or less, continue the following story:

A vampire, a witch and a ghost had plans to celebrate Halloween together. It was a yearly ritual. They'd meet at an old vacant house that overlooked the Delta and head out in search of people to scare. When their favorite night of the year finally arrived it was perfect for Halloween. A full moon broke through the cloudy black sky, casting an eerie light on the city below. The witch and ghost arrived at the old house at the planned time, and waited. They waited some more. The vampire never joined them, because ...

You tell us.

"Twilight" and "True Blood" fans can follow the path of the vampire. Those not caught up in the vampire genre can tell the tale of the witch or the ghost. Let your imagination run wild. Mostly, though, have fun.
